Hallucinations
Visual Arts Portfolio
Preface
This portfolio of artworks is an exploration of how individual minds transcended reality and plunged into the depths of altered perception. Hallucinations are experiences where the boundaries between the real and the imagined blur. In this collection, I was inspired by the surreal and abstract aspects of contemporary art to create dreamlike and bizarre imagery. To capture the multifaceted nature of hallucinations, I’ve experimented with a range of mediums and techniques. This includes paintings, mixed media, digital artworks, and photography.
Hallucinations (2024)
Acrylic on canvas, digitally edited, and printed on Canvas
85cm*110cm
78cm*108cm
In this painting series, I intended to create a dream-like environment filled with symbolic imagery and a contrasted space presenting reality. I’ve distorted the real elements with the melting-like painting to create this virtual reality. This use of shapes and the color palette was inspired and highly influenced by the artist Juae Park, which presents the mysterious realms of human experience and interiority using imageries and color gradients. Therefore, I’ve used abstract and symbolized shapes to show the imagery of the heart, cell structures, and animals in the lighter-toned piece, depicting human imagination. In the darker tone piece, the sharply contrasted color scheme was used as well, but having a concrete presentation of a dark forest, depicting the dark side of reality.
Duality (2024)
Acrylic on canvas
Digital artwork, Neon tubes
60cm*85cm
60cm*85cm
In this painting series, I want to explore the coexistence of opposing faces of an individual. By juxtaposing contrasting elements just like the piece “Hallucinations”, it presented both the imaginary mindset and the real world of an individual. I’ve chosen dark blue as the main tone and contrasting orange as the light on his face. This created a contrast between the depressed face and the hopeful face. In the second piece, which is the imaginary one, I experimented with flexible neon tubes to create a portrait, the strips through his face symbolized that he was blinded to observe and get his mindset to the real world.
Inner Psyche (2024)
Digital installation artwork, LED screen
100cm*125cm
In this piece, I’ve used a circle to abstractly present the inner psyche of an individual and the landscapes of the mind. The cracks, and splashes of paint on the upper layer, symbolized the problems of our personal identity and emotional landscapes. The layer below symbolizes the real peaceful inner psyche.
Reflections (2024)
Photographs projected
182cm*108cm
This is a photography series that has been arranged into a collage. These were taken in a natural cave through a black-and-white filter. It captures the stalactites in the cave and their reflections from the underground water. These reflections created an abstract and virtual space, compared to the real stalactites' bodies they are similar in shape but blurred and distorted by the waves on the water's surface. This links to the theme of distorted reality and the imaginary and real spaces created in the other three pieces.
